If you coach people online or in person, you’ll know this already.

When someone starts a coaching plan, the biggest challenge is rarely the programme. It’s the resistance they bring with them.

Here are the top five pain points new clients typically start with and how you can counter them.

1- Fear of commitment.

Many clients have started and stopped before. They’re worried about failing again or wasting money.

Your job is to reframe commitment as flexibility. Emphasise that the plan adapts to their life, not the other way round, and that consistency beats perfection every time.

2- Overwhelm.

Tracking food, following workouts, hitting steps and drinking water can feel like too much all at once.

Counter this by simplifying the first phase. Give them early wins and focus on one or two habits before layering anything else in.

3- Lack of confidence.

A lot of clients don’t believe they’re capable, even if they say they are. This shows up as missed sessions or half effort.

Build confidence through proof. Set achievable targets, celebrate small progress and remind them how far they’ve already come.

4- Fear of judgement.

Clients worry about being watched, compared or criticised, especially with online check-ins or progress photos.

Create psychological safety. Make it clear that honesty matters more than perfection and that your role is support, not judgement.

5- Unrealistic expectations.

Social media has convinced people that results should be fast and dramatic. When that doesn’t happen, motivation drops.

Educate early. Be upfront about timelines, explain what real progress looks like and keep bringing the focus back to long-term change.

If you can spot these pain points early and address them head on, you’ll improve adherence, results and retention.
