When you’re starting out as a Personal Trainer, it’s tempting to choose one niche straight away… but here’s why that’s one of the worst things you can do at the start:

  • You’ll gain more experience by working with different people, different goals, and different challenges. The more experienced you are, the longer and more successful your career will be.
  • If you’re not an expert yet, there will always be someone with more experience in that niche who clients will go to instead. Which will make it hard to market yourself.
  • Most people who hire a PT just want to lose fat or build muscle and there are plenty of those clients to go around.

Keep it broad at the start. Build your skills, build your confidence, and let your niche find you naturally once you’re ready.

I started off thinking I would only be training athletes 1-2-1. Then a few months down the line it turns out I preferred training middle aged women in group sessions. I was able to make a good career from group training as I enjoyed it more than 1-2-1. Yes I had a range of 1-2-1 clients to supplement that but I was able to build a Gym community of my own off the back of group sessions and classes.

The top and bottom is that you’re only going to do well with the things that you truly enjoy. That’s why you started doing it in the first place and passion will always drive success.
