Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral

WHAT IS THE QUALIFICATION?

This VTCT Level 3 qualification prepares learners to work safely and effectively as an exercise referral instructor. It focuses on the purpose of exercise referral and its importance when working with clients who have specific medical conditions or health-related needs. The course covers key areas including anatomy and physiology for health and exercise, professional practice, nutrition, and an understanding of common medical conditions and the reasons individuals may be referred for exercise. Learners will develop the knowledge and skills required to plan, deliver, and adapt safe and effective exercise programmes for referred clients, working within professional boundaries and referral pathways. The qualification is made up of six mandatory units.

Course Information

  • Applicants are required to hold one of the following qualifications, or an equivalent award that provides eligibility for registration with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs):

    • A Level 2 qualification in Gym-Based Exercise Instruction, including Fitness Instruction or Group Exercise Instruction

    • A Level 3 qualification in Personal Training

    • A Level 3 Diploma in Mat Pilates

    • A Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga

  • This qualification provides learners with the essential knowledge and skills required to operate effectively as an exercise referral instructor. It covers key areas including anatomy and physiology in relation to exercise and health, professional and ethical practice, nutrition, and an understanding of medical conditions alongside common referral pathways. Learners will also develop the ability to design, implement, and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes tailored to individuals with specific medical conditions. The qualification is made up of six mandatory units.

  • This qualification is partially aligned with the professional standard Working with People with Long Term Conditions (Population). Upon successful completion, learners will be eligible to gain 10 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points awarded by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), supporting ongoing professional development and industry recognition.
